The soldiers threw Jesus on the cross. They took His right arm, placed a nail in the middle of the hand and with a hammer drove in the nail. The nail pierced His skin, His flesh. Then they set a nail on the left hand and hammered it in.

Then they bound a rope around His feet and pulled violently. As they were doing so all the bones came out of their joints; the nerves and veins tore in His body; the wounds tore open deeper and larger, and all the bones so stood out that they could be counted. They placed one foot over the other, took a longer and sharper nail and drove it through both His feet into the cross. What a terrible suffering! To be nailed alive on a cross!

When the soldiers were thus nailing Jesus to the cross, Jesus was praying for them: “Father, forgive them because they do not know what they do.”
