As Jesus was praying, an angel from heaven came and encouraged Him. Jesus then got up and went ahead to meet his enemies who were coming, carrying all kinds of weapons: swords, spears and sticks. Jesus turned to the soldiers who had come to arrest him and asked them: “Who is it that you are looking for?” They answered: “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus then told them: “It is me.” Then He looked at them with such a look of courage and majesty that the soldiers grew frightened. They shrank back and fell to the ground. Peter then wanted to defend Jesus. He drew out a sword, struck a blow on one of them and cut his right ear. But Jesus immediately touched the wounded ear of the soldier and it was healed at once.
Then Jesus addressed Himself to Peter: “Put your sword back into its place. Do you think that I could not pray to my Father in Heaven and He would not send twelve armies of angels to defend Me?”
Jesus, by these words, showed clearly that he could easily deliver Himself from his enemies, but that he did not want to do so. He freely wished to suffer and die for us.
